Making a Goodwill Car Donation
How To Donate A Car To Charity – Goodwill Car Donation
If you have an old car that is just lying around, you might want to make a Goodwill car donation for a number of reasons.
First, a little history about Goodwill Industries:
For many years, Goodwill Industries has been internationally respected for the service they provide and the work that they are involved in. It is a charitable organization which was founded in Boston, Massachusetts back in 1902.
They originally collected donations of damaged household goods and furniture as well as clothing and shoes. They would then hire people to repair the goods and then sell them or offer them to the people who repaired them.
Eventually, the organization expanded, giving their even more opportunities to carry out their mission. Today, they have also started to accept car donations.
- First off, if your old is already too old and you already have a newer one that you are using, you might be able to have an easier time just giving the car as a donation to Goodwill.
Instead of spending money to have it repaired and then going through the hassle of looking for buyers, it could be better to drive to the nearest Goodwill headquarters to you and hand over your old car. - Donating your car to Goodwill would also give you a substantial tax deduction.
You would just need to bring the title and the whole Goodwill car donation process would take around 20 to 25 minutes, after which you would be able to immediately claim a tax deduction.
You would no longer need to fill out long forms or go through the process of transferring the title. As long as you have the title, Goodwill would be able to provide you with the receipt as well as the other supporting documents. - Another reason why you might want to consider giving your car to a Goodwill car donation would be having the great feeling that you actually did or gave something that other people could benefit from.
The cars that have been donated to Goodwill are usually given to those who are in need of a car such as a family in need or to a hardworking couple. Sometimes, the car could also be used by Goodwill to use in carrying out their mission through collecting, delivering and transporting more donated goods.
When donating your car to Goodwill, however, there are 4 important things that you would need to check first:
- You would need to verify if you are qualified to receive a tax deduction based upon two things:
- Your filing status
- Your income
Most people are qualified, provided that the donation would be received by an approved charitable organization.
- You will need to determine the fair market value of your car. Goodwill will not do this for you. The easiest way to do this is to check with the online used car guide Kelley Blue Book.
- You would also need to make sure that you will be getting all the details of the Goodwill car donation, which would include:
- A written acknowledgment from the charity that states the sale price of the car.
- If Goodwill plans to use the vehicle for a charitable purpose, such as the “Wheels-to-Work” program, you will be able to deduct the fair market value of the vehicle.
- If the vehicle is going to be used for a certain charitable purpose, you must obtain a written acknowledgment from Goodwill that tells in what manner the car will be utilized.
- Goodwill must supply you with written acknowledgment within thirty days of the sale of the vehicle.
- If the car is going to be used for a charitable purpose, written acknowledgement must be provided to you within thirty days of the donation.
- You will need to provide proof of legal ownership. This includes:
- The original title of the car
- Legal copy of the original title
Also, aside making a Goodwill car donation, you can also look into donating your old car to religious organizations, other charitable organizations, schools and other affiliations which fall under these categories.
