Donating Car Question?
Question by allyn h: Donating car question?
Well We’re going to buy a new car in the next couple of weeks(yoooo hooo!, having a 2 door w/a toddler is a pain in the rear!)
We are thinking of donating the car to our church but i know of a family that attends our church who could use transportation(single Dad w/ 4 children) Do you think it’s rude or not PC to ask the church to give him the car?? I’m sure they have a list of people who need transportation. Can i donate my car directly to him and still get the tax write off???
Thanks in advance for your advice.opinions!

You have to donate it to a qualified organization, which would include your church, and not to an individual. I’ve read elsewhere that donations cannot be directed for the benefit of specific individuals. (There was a problem in my community with deductibility of donations to a fund to benefits the families of five firemen who died in the line of duty!). Of course, you can suggest anything you like, and I can’t see that the church would have a problem with that. But if the church thinks that someone else is in greater need, I hope you won’t hold that against them.
