Car Donation Charities: How To Determine If A Charity Is A Qualified Organization

Before you donate a car to charity you need to confirm that a business is really a charity that is qualified to receive contributions that are tax-deductible. Here are three ways to do so:

1. Check  IRS Publication 78, Cumulative List of Organizations, which is an annual list of most charities. I’ve provided a link to Publication 78, and you can also find it at many public libraries.

2. Call the IRS Customer Account Services division for Tax Exempt and Government Entities. The toll-free phone number is 877) 829-5500.  When you  call, you should have the correct name of the charity on hand as well as its current address.

3. Request to see an organization’s IRS letter that recognizes its tax-exempt status.

IRS Publication 78, however, does not list every single qualified organization. Religious organizations such as churches, temples, mosques, or synagogues are qualified but aren’t required by the IRS to sign up for an exemption recognition.

Here is a list of some additional organizations that are considered to be qualified IRS charities:

  1. Religious organizations
  2. State, federal, and government institutions (as long as the car donation is for public use)
  3. Non-profit hospitals and schools
  4. The Red Cross
  5. Good Will
  6. Meals on Wheels
  7. Care
  8. The Salvation Army
  9. Girls’ and Boy Scouts of America
